You won't need to risk your own money buying items to resell. You'll also need to perfect ways to get items. At first your friends and co-workers will provide you with a good stream of salable items. Remember, by consigning with you, the seller gets more money than they would otherwise. After a while this stream will dwindle and you will need to go out and find consignors.

Although you may get an occasional windfall with less savvy bidders, in the long term your sales will be much less than that of other sellers of similar items. That's not to say you shouldn't recoup your shipping and handling costs in the process. We're not in business to lose money, but make sure you are not trying to pad your 'profit' at the expense of loosing bidders and ultimately sales. If you're fair to your customers they will think better of you for it and in the long run your sales will be better. Take the time to do similar research on your own items and market niche and find out where you stand with your shipping and handling charges.

Let buyers pay by check or money order if you don't provide payment through Paypal or credit cards. Sign up with Paypal if you don't have your own merchant account. Place in your item listing your own merchant account or credit card processor information. Providing as many payment options as available is better. Including all payment options leaves no buyers behind.

Don't buy to resell for only a $5 profit when you can make $20 on a different item. What does the customer expect to see in a description. Auction terms and conditions should be included with each auction. What shipping options are available? Do you take questions? Do you ship only certain days? What kind of payments do you take? Type whatever standard terms you offer in a word processor and cut and paste into your auctions. For some sellers, typing the content for each auction is one of the most time consuming tasks.

While this may seem obvious, a lot of sellers don't do it (in fact, searching for listings in which people have ineffective or mis-spelled titles can often get you some great items which you can resell for a profit. The only symbols you should ever use are & or + when their use will save you valuable title space. Once again, all of these are a complete waste of valuable title space. Acronyms and abbreviations are another matter however. It is to your advantage to learn at least some of these.

There are limited sales of ivory, tortoise shell, marine products and other items relating to animals. Animals and wildlife products may not be sold, which includes stuffed birds and pelts from endangered species. This area is quite complex and any would-be seller needs to thoroughly understand the various laws before getting involved in these sales. Some states, for instance, forbid anyone to make more than a few dollars in profit (or no profit at all) on the resale of tickets. Event tickets have state-by-state laws that make their sale complex.

If you don't care your potential bidders will disappear. Work on your Feedback Rating by meeting your commitments and providing great customer service. By providing a clear description of the item and its condition, with supporting photos, you maximize the potential of your actions. Are you overpricing your items and then wondering why they're not selling? Do your research and determine competitive prices before placing your auctions. Return all emails as quickly as possible.

If you have access to something unique, such as a specialized book, health product or computer program that other sellers don't have license for, your products will be in demand. Bring something unique to the marketplace. This tip is worth putting some time into. Prepare for the end of the fad, even as you are beginning the selling.

Dealers often resell your item to make themselves a profit. Sure it's okay to give things away now and then to friends in need. But if you're planning to sell an item and you happen to know a friend, acquaintance or co-worker seeking just such an item, why not give them first purchase option? When I married, I ended up with a lot of duplicate items just taking up storage space. One day during a casual conversation with a co-worker I found a new home for my almost new, small microwave. Make sure you inquire about what happens to the clothing if it doesn't sell (so you get it back and they don't cart it off to the nearest charity clothing shop which some will if you want them to do so.
